Choose Compasssion – Australia Day 2022
What difference does it make to be a follower of Jesus as we approach Australia Day?
As we continue through Matthew’s gospel we discover the story of how Jesus enters Jerusalem on what we now call Palm Sunday. We pay attention to the behaviour of the crowds as Jesus leaves Jericho and travels up to Jerusalem – first as their procession is interrupted by the cries of two blind men, and then as they finally celebrate Jesus’ arrival. As we approach Australia day we can be like those crowds approaching Jerusalem – excited by what we want Jesus to do for us, not so excited about what He wants to do for others!
This message unpacks why that is often the case with us and calls us to turn away from condemnation or competition and instead choose compassion. It shows us how to have hearts capable of making that choice. We imagine how this can make a massive difference in the life of our nation in 2022 in two key areas: our response to how others are dealing with COVID-19 measures and our treatment of Australia’s first nations peoples.
