1 Corinthians 8&9 – Becoming a Community of Conscience pt 1

In chapters 8 to 11 of 1 Corinthians the Apostle Paul is responding to a question about whether it’s OK to eat meat that was (or might have been) used in idol worship. Doesn’t sound that relevant for most of us today, right? But God in His wisdom saw fit to preserve this pastoral wisdom for the Church because every community of believers in every culture has to wrestle with the issue of how we live in the world. Basic things like eating and drinking, socialising and participating in civic events always involve the need for discernment. How do we do these things in a Christ-like way? How do we stay connected with people whose beliefs and behaviours don’t fit with our own? How can we train our consciences to faithfully guide us in the everyday decisions we face?
This message begins a four-part exploration through these chapters, introducing the tension between the positions Christian often take – either to withdraw from the world in case we get tainted by sin (weak conscience); or to be so unconcerned about sin that we fit right in with the world (seared conscience).
