1 Corinthians 16 – Is Sin Still Winning?

1 Corinthians 16 - Is Sin Still Winning?

Chapter 16 of 1 Corinthians is a bit like the closing scenes of an adventure story. The good news of Jesus has been shown to overcome every barrier in our relationship with God and each other. The “most excellent way” of love is now available to all of us. Sin and Death is vanquished. The letter closes with a glimpse into what will come next for the characters in the story.

But with Timothy on his way to Corinth as they receive this letter, why did Paul need to warn the Corinthians not to give Timothy a reason to be afraid?  Despite Paul’s supreme confidence in the power of the gospel to transform us, he clearly expected some people to continue in their sinful ways.

Anyone who has been part of a church family or network of churches like those in Corinth will identify with this. Sometimes we give each other reasons to be nervous or embittered. That’s why the call of 1 Corinthians 16 matters to us today as much as it did to the first readers.
