Stewardship of Time

Stewardship of Time

Having a good weekly pattern for how we use time is a huge help in making sure we are being good stewards of this precious gift!

Here’s an example of a weekly plan that has been designed with godly priorities in mind.  Notice that it’s colour coded for easy reference and the number of hours spent in each activity is calculated as well to see if the pattern actually reflects the priorities!  Keep in mind that our priorities don’t separate out into different activities.  You can be reaching the lost while you work or pursue your hobbies for example, but still it’s good to make sure time is being allocated specifically to do the things that matter.

This fictional person attends our Sunday morning gatherings and has allocated time for hospitality afterward – a great way to help build a strong sense of church family!  They like to get up early to spend an hour in prayer and reading their Bible, another awesome use of time!  To make sure they can do that, they avoid the temptation of late-night tv, internet, reading etc because they need their 7.5 hours of sleep!  There’s a half-hour commute each way to work, but that’s great time to listen to training podcasts on things like spiritual leadership, financial management and so on.  He/she is committed to Growth Group on Wednesday nights and they also support each other in pursuing social events occasionally on Saturday evenings where they can get Christian and non-Christian friends & family mingling together in the hope of sharing their faith.  This personal is also a volunteer at Youth and participates in team prep and debrief so they are helping train each other to be good ministers of Jesus.

Family relationships matter, so as well as working together in home duties, there’s also quality time with date nights (split between spouse and kids!) and supporting the kids’ sports.  Life never fits into neat boundaries, so there’s enough free time in the week to adjust to working overtime and all the other pressures that sometimes require adjustments.  However by having a regular pattern that reflects God’s priorities and principles, this person is learning to resist their own natural impulses and to reject the pattern of this world, just as we discussed on Sunday!

You’re right – the last thing you should do is write up a beautiful weekly pattern that you have zero chance of living up to!  That makes things worse, not better.  Instead, prayerfully look through your God-honouring priorities and see which one is in most need of attention.  Make one change that will help you take the next step in that area and do it consistently for a couple of months.  Set an appointment in your calendar for the time when you will review that change and select your next one if you are ready.
