Woes into Wows pt 3: From Deceit to Truthfulness
In Matthew 23:16-22 Jesus addresses the issue of honesty. Why have a system that compels people to be truthful sometimes but not all the time? Every culture has a system for limiting dishonesty, but why should the people of God need that? Deceitfulness is an offense to God no matter how you phrase it! As we look at Jesus’ rebuke of the leaders for the system they oversee, we discover that we too sometimes prefer to live by rules that give us permission to not be completely truthful. There are times we don’t what to do what we said we would do; and times we do not want to say what is really true. We need Jesus to first change our hearts so that we want to be truthful as He is truthful; then to help us learn the skills of truthful living in community with each other.
