Time for Judgement
That’s got to be the most unappealing sermon title ever, right? We just don’t want to see angry, legalistic people telling everyone else that God’s gonna get them!
But we all actually want there to be judgement in our world. We want someone with the right authority, power, knowledge and motivation to step in when people are suffering injustice and to put things right. Even though most of us don’t like the idea of being accountable to someone for our actions, we do want to know that there are people we can turn to for help with the actions of others are causing us pain.
In Matthew 21 we come across one of the stranger stories about Jesus. He curses a fig tree for not having any fruit on it when He was hungry, so it whithers & dies! It sounds really petulant and very un-Messiah-like! But when we think about the story a bit more and remember what was going on at the time, we realise that Jesus is teaching something very important about judgement and about what God was doing in the events that would happen that week and in the years to come. This short story is a very powerful illustration of judgement and it’s one that we need today as much as the people of Jesus’ time needed it.
