Compelled by a Larger Vision
As we begin 2017 many of us start thinking about things we’d like to do better or differently in the year ahead. We tend to put some things on our lists of to-do’s, like getting fit, spending more time with family etc.. James 4:13-17 sounds a pretty grim warning about making our own plans and failing to carry through on the good things we ought to do. It’s a bit of a wet blanket for new year’s resolutions! However what it’s actually saying is very powerful. It challenges us to not waste time on our small ambitions or to rely on our limited capacities. Instead, we are urged to submit our ambitions to God and to be compelled by a larger vision. God has prepared good works in advance for us to do; and when we devote ourselves to what He has called us to, we can be sure of both the eternal significance of the work and the limitless power of God’s help.
