Acts 1:1-11 – Suffering is the Path, Not the Point!

The book of Acts is volume 2 of Luke’s account of the origin story of Christianity. In volume one – the Gospel of Luke – he told the story of Jesus up to His ascension. At the beginning of volume 2 – the Acts of the Apostles – he describes the baton change as Jesus entrusts His ministry to the people He trained for the task.
And just as the apostles and the rest of the community of disciples saw Jesus go through suffering, they know that they will suffer for the Kingdom of Heaven too. It’s a daunting prospect given what it meant for Jesus. That’s why Jesus is careful to be very honest that suffering is the path. He’s been up-front about that the whole time. But after His resurrection He’s able to demonstrate that the path is not the point. It’s not the main point or the end point of following Jesus. God will somehow work in, through and despite our suffering to bring about resurrection life.
Don’t be surprised by suffering, be surprised by hope!
