1 Corinthians 11 pt 3: Authority and Equality

In the first half of 1 Corinthians 11 Paul commends the Corinthian house churches for the way they are continuing to worship together the way they were first taught, where men and women together were praying and prophesying as the Holy Spirit directed. However he urges them to return to something they’d apparently left behind – the culturally appropriate way of presenting themselves that communicated orderly relationships within marriage and singleness. Something about the way they wore their hair or head coverings communicated the authority of a husband within marriage; and to neglect them was to disrespect both marriage itself and the giver of marriage. To live wisely together as followers of Jesus meant working out together how to apply both these truths: Equality/Mutual dependence and Order/Authority.
This can be a tricky issue to navigate, with our distance from the original context clouding our understanding of language and cultural meaning. But despite the many differences in interpretation there are consistent and clear Scriptural principles that can powerfully guide how we do life together as men and women in God’s Church.
