1 Timothy 4: A Community with Holy Habits

As Paul continues to pass on leadership wisdom to Timothy we discover some ways that we can protect churches from being led away from Christ by false teaching.  The trick in recognizing harmful influences is not to be an expert in every type of error, but to be an expert in the good stuff!  By working hard to teach the truth about Jesus and to train both himself and his church family in obedience to Jesus, Timothy would be fulfilling the calling of a godly leader.  People would continue to thrive on the nourishment of good teaching about Jesus which transforms this life and prepares us for the next; and at the same time would be able to detect anything that didn’t fit in with this teaching and reject it as useless, divisive and destructive.

That’s great advice for us today!  What holy habits are we developing to train ourselves and others in the truth of Jesus?  How are we making sure we’re not just following the patterns of our culture, failing to detect the ways they don’t fit with the lives we have been called to lead?
