1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – Opportunity or Obligation?

What’s the difference between an opportunity and an obligation? The people in Corinth were surrounded by opportunities to do whatever made them happy – there were few moral constraints on promiscuity, gluttony, gossip and so much more! Do we think of obedience to Jesus as an obligation that forces us to stop doing what we want to do, or an opportunity to do something better? And does the difference matter anyway? One of the biggest challenges for people wanting to follow Jesus in our culture is how we make it fit with everything else we’ve crammed into our lives. Like the Corinthians, we have to grapple with what we need to say “No” to. Understanding both the obligation and opportunity of discipleship to Jesus helps us to navigate those decisions with clarity and freedom.
