1 Corinthians 5 – Fight Your Sin

In John 8 we see Jesus’ encounter with religious community that takes the sins of others very seriously – they’re legalistic. In 1 Corinthians 5 we see Paul address a religious community that looks very different – it isn’t taking sin very seriously at all! They’re licentious – giving people licence to do whatever they feel. But at heart it’s the same issue, an unwillingness to genuinely fight sin. We see how Paul’s approach in 1 Corinthians 5 pastorally applies the same approach that Jesus uses in John 8 to help us avoid sin’s bondage in legalism or licentiousness in order to find true liberty as we fight sin together.
