1 Corinthians 11:17-34 – Order and Equality 1: Hospitality

In the last half of 1 Corinthians 11 Paul addresses the way the house churches in Corinth were partaking in the Lord’s Supper… which meant it wasn’t truly the Lord’s Supper at all! God’s stern correction of the saints in Corinth demonstrates how seriously we need to consider our own participation in Communion. However we celebrate it; it is an expression of God’s hospitality to us. Every time we take it as a local gathering of God’s family we are reminded of God’s generous and costly hospitality. We are welcomed into His family because Jesus’ death removes our guilt and declares us worthy. But if God declares us worthy in Jesus, how is it that we can take communion in an “unworthy manner”? We explore how this happened in Corinth, how it might happen for us today and how God might be calling us to respond.
